Relegation battle heats up as Arrows slip…struggling Citizens scrape draw

Whereas the race for the coveted Debmarine Namibia Premiership title remains a heated affair atop the log table, this weekend’s action, however, saw a few surprises at the bottom of the log as struggling Citizens FC collected a point while Eleven Arrows slipped further into the red.

Going into Saturday’s match against Karasburg-based Young Brazilians at the Karasburg stadium, Citizens were rooted to the bottom of the log with just one point from 11 games and faced a tough assignment of avoiding to drop further points.

Although Brazilians had home ground advantage, an embattled but determined Citizens on Saturday rose above the odds to force a tightly-contested 1-all draw against the home side, which saw them walking away with one point and slightly boosting their chances of surviving relegation.

Citizens, despite the morale-boosting draw on Saturday, still have a lot of work to do on the coming rounds of matches and will need to give it their best shot if they are to hopefully survive relegation come end of the season.

Brazilians are equally in the same dilemma as Citizens, as they too are fighting to survive relegation and Saturday’s draw was similarly a good boost in their fight for survival.

At the Unam stadium in the capital on Saturday, relegation-battling Eleven Arrows squandered a perfect opportunity to move out of the danger zone when they lost 0-2 to home side Unam FC, a result that left the relegation axe hovering dangerously above their heads.

At the top of the log table, leaders African Stars maintained momentum with a narrow 1-0 win over Civics at the SKW stadium on Saturday, a win that will go a long way in further bolstering their ambitions of winning the league trophy.

Fellow league title chasers Life Fighters missed out on an opportunity to catch up with Stars after they lost 3-4 against Tigers, while coastal giants Blue Waters also dropped points on Saturday when they lost 2-3 against Tura Magic at the Unam stadium.

Otjiwarongo side Mighty Gunners reaffirmed their credentials as serious title contenders with a 2-0 away victory over Gobabis outfit Young African at the Legare stadium on Saturday, while Okahandja United remained on course with a narrow 1-0 win over Black Africa at the Khomasdal stadium also on Saturday.
